He is a frequent speaker and technical advisor for government agencies, public institutions, and global enterprises on topics including Industrial AI, Edge AI, Robotics, Robotic Transformation (RX), Smart Construction, and Generative AI applications for industrial safety.Current safety risk assessment and response at industrial sites have largely depended on managers conducting on-site inspections and workers performing manual checks. To identify hazards, people often need to enter confined spaces, elevated areas, or other hard-to-access locations. As a result, the very process of managing risk can expose personnel to additional danger. This presentation introduces an RX (Robotic Transformation)-based safety management solution in which quadruped robots assist human safety managers during hazardous operations. The solution integrates and coordinates multiple robots, enabling them to autonomously deploy throughout a worksite and access areas that are difficult or unsafe for humans to enter. The robots collect images and video, which are then analyzed by an AI system that incorporates a knowledge graph structured from industrial safety regulations and standard operating procedures. Based on this analysis, the AI evaluates potential hazards, while the robots can carry out basic response actions—such as operating valves or pressing emergency stop buttons—to reduce the need for people to enter dangerous environments. By supporting the entire safety assessment workflow—from pre-task inspections and real-time monitoring to post-task verification—the robots assist human safety managers while enabling the gradual automation and standardization of hazardous operations. This presentation will demonstrate how humans and robots can collaborate by sharing complementary roles in industrial safety management, and will present practical examples of how this RX-based approach is transforming safety management in high-risk industries, including shipbuilding and offshore engineering.

Steelmakers are currently developing technologies to evaluate the safety of steels and welded joints in liquefied ammonia environments, which is essential for securing the reliability of storage and transportation facilities. Meanwhile, in the maritime sector, the transition toward carbon neutrality is accelerating the development of ammonia-fueled vessels, ammonia carriers, and bunkering infrastructure. However, as IMO is introducing stringent environmental regulations, high-efficiency Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) are regaining attention as a key solution for reducing vessel fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Hanwha Ocean is developing rotor sails and wing sails as wind-assisted propulsion devices suitable for large vessels. In developing these systems, engineers must consider not only how to maximize the efficiency of each WAPS but also how to optimize their placement to minimize interference with the hull or other surrounding structures. More importantly, the study focuses on identifying optimal routes that maximize wind energy utilization. It was confirmed that by modeling the aerodynamic characteristics of technologies such as rotor sails and wing sails—and by determining navigation paths that maximize wind energy using real-time marine and meteorological data—propulsion efficiency can be significantly improved and substantial fuel savings achieved compared to the shortest route. This research is significant in that it proposes sustainable decarbonization strategies and economically viable operational approaches for the shipping industry.

He has participated in a wide range of projects, including LNG carriers, FPSOs, FLNGs, icebreaking vessels, and polar research ships, and has extensive experience in Winterization, Anti-Icing, and De-Icing technologies. In particular, he has been working closely with major shipyards and shipowners on the application of electric heating systems for freeze protection and energy efficiency improvement in Arctic shipping routes. He is actively involved in the development and commercialization of technologies that enhance the safety and reliability of vessel operations in extreme cold environments.As the development and utilization of Arctic shipping routes accelerate, ensuring the safe operation of vessels and maintaining energy efficiency in extremely cold environments have become increasingly important. This presentation introduces the concept and importance of winterization technologies applied to vessels operating along Arctic routes and in polar environments. It also explains the design principles and practical applications of Electric Heat Tracing (EHT) systems used in ships and offshore plants. In addition, the presentation covers icing, freezing, and snow accretion issues that may occur under extremely low-temperature conditions, together with Anti-Icing and De-Icing solutions. Senior Researcher, AI Convergence Center, Korean Register (KR)Operational data generated on board ships — including navigation, machinery, and cargo data — is still managed in heterogeneous formats and interfaces across manufacturers and systems, resulting in significant conversion and cleansing costs when utilized ashore. The need for a data standard-based onboard data platform is becoming increasingly critical, as the development of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and various maritime AI services requires reliable, standardized data as a prerequisite. Based on international data standards such as ISO 19848 and IEC 61162, this presentation introduces a data platform architecture that parses raw data from various onboard protocols through a data collection agent, then maps and integrates it into a standardized tagging schema to ensure seamless connectivity with shore-based systems. This presentation proposes how the deployment of a standard-based onboard data platform can contribute to the digital transformation and data-driven competitiveness of the shipbuilding and ocean industries, and further advance the development of autonomous navigation and AI services.

With over 25 years of dedicated experience in the shipping and port sectors, the speaker has been a driving force behind key logistics and IT modernization projects since 2000, beginning with the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs' Global Container Tracking System ISP (Information Strategy Planning). Throughout their career, they have led and contributed to numerous high-impact initiatives, including the automated container terminal gate system, port operation optimization, comparative analysis of parcel information systems, ontology-based logistics information system construction, and e-Marketplace development. Expanding their focus to maritime market intelligence in 2011 at the Maritime Exchange Information Center, they served as Project Manager (PM) for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' maritime trading support system, while leading platform planning, S&P market research, vessel valuation, and policy support for national flag carriers. Since joining the Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) upon its establishment in 2018, they have held prominent leadership roles—including Manager of Corporate Planning, Head of ESG Management, and Head of the Maritime Industry Information Center—and currently serve as the Head of the Maritime AI Strategy Department. Currently working at the Conformity Assessment Center of the Korean Register (KR) since 2016, he is in charge of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission verification, testing laboratory certification, and third-party inspections. Majored in Mechanical Engineering, he previously worked as an outfitting design engineer at the Shipbuilding Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) from 2012 to 2015, experienced in the outfitting design of merchant vessels, including container ships and LNG carriers. However, due to the unique characteristics of the shipbuilding industry, which has a large number of suppliers and a long life cycle of ships, Scope 3 has a very wide range and a standardized calculation system has not been clearly established, and many companies are facing practical limitations. Also, companies that are not subject to mandatory emissions reporting are facing challenges in calculating their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and establishing a GHG inventory. To overcome these realistic limitations, this presentation will examine the methodology for calculating emissions by category suitable for the shipbuilding industry based on the latest trends such as GHG emission calculation and reporting guidelines. In particular, we would like to share practical calculation know-how such as limitations on field-oriented primary data collection and how to utilize emission coefficients, and present systematic supply chain carbon management and response strategies to prepare for the upcoming mandatory third-party verification

Donghae Lee, CEO of East Sea Solutions Ltd., joined the Korea Development Bank (KDB) in 1989 and went on to serve as Head of the Marine Industry Division and Head of the Integrated Marine Finance Center, building a career of more than 30 years in international finance within KDB and BFC. He is recognized as a structured finance expert spanning the shipping, shipbuilding, and financial ecosystems, and has supported the maritime industry by developing ship finance products such as the Green Ship Program and ship finance on-lending. During the early part of the prolonged shipping recession following the 2009 global financial crisis, he played a leading role in establishing a first-generation maritime fund—the KDB Let’s Together Shipping Fund—which provided financial relief to the maritime industry and market participants. During his tenure at BFC, he led research desks and innovated financial proposals designed to accelerate eco-friendly fleet transformation; promoted KRW-denominated ship finance to stimulate and enhance local banks' ship financing; and proposed a shipbuilding mutual association to create additional capacity for issuing refund guarantees (RG) for small and mid-sized shipbuilders. Dr. Younwoo Nam majored in Combustion Engineering and has built his professional career through the Korean Register (KR) and the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA). He currently serves as an Executive Director of Excursion ship and Ferry Safety Association from Ministry of the Interior and Safety. His professional expertise covers green ships, maritime safety, the marine industry, and ship-related technologies, regulations, and policies. He has been involved in a wide range of research and policy initiatives, including the development of marine engine and exhaust gas after-treatment technologies in response to marine air pollution regulations, the enactment and revision of laws and regulations related to green ships, and the promotion and dissemination of environmentally friendly vessels. He has also worked extensively on the implementation of international conventions for the prevention of marine pollution. Dr. Nam currently serves as an expert committee member for various government agencies, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and Korea Coast Guard. He has also participated in meetings and international cooperation activities of organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), contributing to the development and revision of international conventions and technical standards as well as the advancement of related domestic policies and regulatory frameworks. His recent activities include supporting the transition of domestic excursion ship and ferry to environmentally friendly vessels, the introduction of autonomous navigation systems and related legislative reforms, and research on marine pollution response technologies and green ship technologies.The global shipbuilding and maritime industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by global carbon neutrality initiatives, the IMO Net-Zero Framework, the transition to alternative and environmentally friendly fuels, electric and hybrid propulsion, digitalization, and autonomous shipping. These technological paradigm shifts are transforming not only shipbuilding methods but also the markets for marine equipment, systems, and related services. Against this backdrop, while Korea’s shipbuilding industry has established strong global competitiveness, it is important to examine the current status of Korea’s small- and medium-sized and coastal vessel shipbuilding and marine equipment industries, as well as how they should respond to rapidly changing market conditions. In particular, their competitiveness is constrained not only by the relatively small scale of individual companies, but also by interconnected structural factors, including the limited size of the domestic market, the nature of the ordering structure, the industrial ecosystem, investment capacity, regulatory and certification requirements, availability of skilled professionals, and the current systems for technology development and field demonstration. At the same time, the transition toward green, electrified, digital, and autonomous shipping presents new growth opportunities for Korean small and medium-sized enterprises. Emerging markets are being created in areas such as hybrid propulsion, batteries, energy management systems, green retrofitting, vessel data and AI, remote monitoring and control, and autonomous vessel equipment. This presentation will examine the current status and structural challenges of Korea’s coastal vessel industry amid these technological and market changes, while exploring the roles and collaborative frameworks required among companies, shipyards, ship operators, research institutions, and government. Furthermore, it will propose strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea’s coastal vessel marine equipment industry by establishing a comprehensive industrial ecosystem that extends beyond R&D support to encompass demonstration, certification, deployment, commercialization, and export, thereby enabling the industry to expand into the global shipbuilding and maritime market.

As a member of the Republic of Korea delegation, he regularly attends the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG), serving as a vital bridge to deliver the latest regulatory updates to the global and domestic maritime industries. Furthermore, he extensively supports international cooperation between the Korean government and global maritime authorities, including Singapore, Australia, and Denmark, to establish bilateral Green Shipping Corridors.To achieve decarbonization in international shipping, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is actively pursuing the implementation of the 'IMO Net-Zero Framework' (NZF). This framework is built upon two core pillars: a technical measure, namely the GHG Fuel Intensity (GFI) standard, and an economic measure in the form of a global GHG pricing mechanism. To establish the legal basis for these measures, draft amendments to MARPOL Annex VI (proposing a new Chapter 5) were approved at MEPC 83. Under the new regulations, greenhouse gas emissions from marine fuels will be subject to strict regulatory oversight based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA / Well-to-Wake) methodology, covering emissions from production to consumption. Consequently, developing detailed technical guidelines for the practical implementation of these rules has emerged as an urgent priority for the global maritime industry. Although the final adoption of the draft amendments has experienced delays due to differing positions among Member States, the introduction of these new regulations remains inevitable to meet the net-zero targets outlined in the '2023 IMO GHG Strategy'. Therefore, proactive preparation by the shipping and shipbuilding industries is of paramount importance. This presentation delivers an in-depth analysis of the key outstanding issues within the Net-Zero Framework, alongside the latest progress in developing technical guidelines (such as GFI calculation methodologies and the ZNZ [Zero or Near-Zero] technology and fuel reward mechanism) discussed during recent MEPC sessions and Intersessional Working Group (ISWG-GHG) meetings. Furthermore, it will explore the major bottlenecks and negotiation points anticipated at the upcoming MEPC 85 and its extraordinary sessions, providing a comprehensive outlook on the revised regulatory timeline and strategic technical and policy-level countermeasures for the domestic maritime sector to secure a competitive edge.

Despite ongoing geopolitical conflict and technical debate, this study examines the shipbuilding industry's survival and market-leadership strategies around three non-negotiable premises: ① the inevitability of fuel transition, ② the imperative of improving fleet energy efficiency, and ③ the establishment of data-driven measurement and verification capability (e.g., LCA emission factors) as a competitive asset. The shipbuilding and marine equipment industry is currently accelerating the development and real-ship application of multi-fuel engines encompassing not only methanol, biodiesel, and LNG but also carbon-free fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, while simultaneously pursuing disruptive technologies such as small modular reactor (SMR) propulsion. However, the chronic supply shortage and high cost of eco-friendly bio- and e-fuels remain the principal barriers to commercialization, making it essential during this transitional period to combine high-efficiency use of fossil fuels with hull efficiency improvement techniques. Accordingly, this study reviewed a range of hull energy efficiency improvement technologies. Specifically, it analyzed approaches for maximizing onboard energy recovery, including Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) — Rotor, Wing, and Suction types — Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based low-temperature waste heat recovery power generation, and LNG cold-energy-utilizing HVAC systems, while also examining the applicability of digital twin-based Intelligent Smart Ship Solutions (ISS) and real-time voyage optimization monitoring technologies. In conclusion, this study proposes that rather than waiting for the finalization of detailed IMO NZF figures, the shipbuilding industry should proactively build a flexible technology portfolio capable of responding to diversified regulatory scenarios. It further suggests fostering eco-friendly fuel certification capability and real-time GHG regulatory response digital capacity as new core competitiveness for the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry, while distributing verification and investment burdens through regional industry-academia-research collaboration.

Byeonggu Kim is Director of the Sustainable Energy & Environment Department and Head of the Arctic Route Task Force at Ulsan Port Authority, where he has served since 2010 in roles spanning port marketing, overseas business development, alternative marine fuels, and terminal investment. In 2023, he led the world's first methanol and biodiesel bunkering operation for a container vessel. The achievement earned Ulsan Port Authority a Prime Minister's Commendation for Excellence in Proactive Administration and the 2024 IAPH Sustainability Award. His personal honors include a Minister's Commendation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (2025), a Prime Minister's Commendation on Day of the Sea (2024), and a Minister's Commendation from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for hazardous cargo management (2019). He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Ulsan (2016) and a B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering from Dong-A University (2010).Since the Paris Agreement, shipping has been moving quickly toward low- and zero-carbon marine fuels. The IMO has set a target of net-zero emissions from international shipping by 2050, and while formal adoption of its Net-Zero Framework has been postponed, the direction of the transition is clear. This is not a challenge for shipping alone, ports must also build the infrastructure and supply chains to deliver sustainable marine fuels. This presentation looks at what ports need to prepare to stay competitive during this transition, drawing on the experience of the Port of Ulsan, and briefly introduces Ulsan's progress on green shipping corridors, including the Korea–U.S. initiative.

There was a competition between clean diesel technology and hybrid vehicles, with companies that chose the wrong technology facing harsh hardships, while those that chose the right technology experienced sustained growth. Even today, competition continues between battery, hybrid, and fuel cell technologies. Similarly, carbon dioxide regulations for the marine shipping industry, including those from the IMO and the EU, will be implemented starting in 2028. To address these regulations, the shipping industry is undertaking various initiatives, and fuel cell technology is attracting attention as a viable alternative. Fuel cell technology has been developed primarily by Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda, and is already in mass production and sales. However, infrastructure challenges remain, making it still in its early stages of widespread adoption. The introduction of hydrogen fuel cell technology on ships is expected to generate significant synergy effects in its application to everyday life. This presentation will explore the current state of fuel cell technology and highlight fuel cell-based ship (including battery ships for short range) projects currently underway in Korea and internationally.

His current research focuses on developing core technologies and demonstration projects for large-scale solid-state hydrogen storage systems integrated with water electrolysis. In this invited lecture, titled "Industrial Versatility of Solid-State Hydrogen Storage," he will share practical insights into technology development, real-world applications, and future industrial prospects.This presentation introduces the current status of solid-state hydrogen storage system development at Sungwon Enterprise Co., Ltd. and the demonstration project being carried out in Donghae City. Based on the development achievements and demonstration experience of a large-scale, low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage system integrated with water electrolysis, the presentation explores the industrial versatility and future application potential of solid-state hydrogen storage technology across the hydrogen value chain, including hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization.
